How To Apply Textures to Uneven Surfaces

Applying texture to a flat surface, or flatly applying a texture across a whole image (as a means to age it or degrade it) is simple stuff. Realistically applying a texture to an uneven surface is much more hands-on (more so than simply overlaying a texture and changing the Blending mode).

Step 1

Job number one, as ever, is pooling your assets together. I got the man from iStockphoto here and the tree bark (courtesy of K. Tuck) from stock.xchng here.

Step 2

Cut out the face using the Pen tool (set to Paths not Shape Layers). Cut and paste it into your blank canvas (1562 pixels by 1172 pixels at 300dpi). Open up the bark image, and import it into your working document. Resize and rotate the document as in the screengrab.

Step 3

Use the Clone Stamp tool to fill in the rest of the texture. Avoid easily recognizable repetitions in the texture like the ones circled. Clone them out. I used a 200 pixel, soft-edged brush to do this

Start with 2 rectangles side by side.

Then draw a trapezoid on top.

Step 3

Place 3 squares where the wheels should be.

Step 4

Now draw the details for Lightning McQueen’s rear flaps and windshield. Add the eyes on top of the windshield.

Now draw McQueen’s flame designs. Add the headlights and a cheeky grin on his bumper.

Step 7

Draw the wheel designs next.

Step 8

Blacken your outlines and put a few more details on the car. There’s McQueen straight from the Piston Cup.

How To Draw King Julian From Penguins of Madagascar with Easy Steps

The Penguins of Madagascar is a Nickelodeon cartoon show that comes from the Movie Madagascar. Today, I am teaching you how to draw King Julian, a ring-tailed-lemur, from Penguins of Madagascar. I have put together an easy step by step drawing tutorial that builds up King Julien’s form with simple shapes. Not only will young kids be able to do this, but also teens and adults will enjoy it as well. Find the easy Private drawing lesson & instructions below. Good luck.

Step 1

Start off drawing King Julian by drawing the basic shapes that make up his face…a circle and an oval. King Julian isn’t looking straight ahead so his facial features are closer to the right side of his face. Put a guideline in the center horizontally (left and right) of the circle and a line further to the right than center vertically (up and down).

Step 2

Now lightly sketch a guideline in the center of the left side of King Julian’s face.

Step 3

Now draw both eyes…the one on the right is a little smaller and a little bit more of an egg shape. Use the guidelines to figure out where to place his eyes.
